Day 1: St Bees to Ennerdale Bridge

Before setting off we remembered the Alfred Wainwright tradition of dipping one's toes in the Irish sea and selecting a pebble to cast into the North sea on arrival at Robin Hood's Bay! We set off around the cliffs on a path more suited to rabbits than a 67 year old with an ankle brace and size 8 feet and walked several miles before turning inland. A highlight was the view from Dent hill, a fairly steep climb. We had a strong wind to contend with but pleasant temperature of 12-15 degrees. We all both enjoyed and endured the day. 6 hours of walking and about 25 ks. However the BandB was rather disappointing and a good shower was sorely missed. Then we had a poor end to the day as we elected to walk home from the pub back to the farm. Got lost in the dark and walked 5ks! Fortunately Andrew had the foresight to put a torch in his pocket. The pub meal had been of such gargantuan proportions that we felt we needed to walk it off. Bad decision.
